Reds to hold forums in Isan provinces

Khon Rak Udon Club chairman Khwanchai Praipana says he will organise forums in nine provinces of the Northeast on Saturday with the theme "February 2, 2013: Show the power of democracy by voting”.

Speaking on a local radio station based in Udon Thani, Mr Khwanchai said the forums were in opposition to the efforts of Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary general of People’s Democratic Reform Committee, to derail the scheduled general election for the House of Representatives.

His club would hold a forum in Udon Thani and encourage people to cast their votes on Feb 2.

Similar forums would also be organised in eight other provinces, Mr Kwanchai said -  Maha Sarakham, Sakon Nakhon, Yasothon, Surin, Loei, Mukdahan, Roi Et and Nong Bua Lamphu. Red-shirt supporters from Nong Khai and Bung Kan will join the forum in Udon Thani.

He said participants need not wear red because the forums are aimed at educating the public on legal issues related to the election, to counter information being distributed by the PDRC.

Mr Khwanchai also said he plans to gather a large crowd of red-shirt supporters to welcome caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra when she visits the province on Friday and Saturday.

Mr Khwanchai is a strong supporter of the red-shirt movement under the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

Perhaps he should also be telling Redshirts to respect the right of the other Parties to campaign in the Northeast without fear of intimidation!

I think neither side is able to do much educating of its followers. And if it did it would risk losing them on both sides. In the meantime, there are elements of a class struggle and supporting those in need of a better life should be a factor.

David Duke, Ku Klux Klan leader who ran for governor in Louisiana, I believe in 1991, said people on welfare should participate in much the same way you suggest. Although I despise the KKK and fascists in general, the idea is not without merit.

Give people jobs in public works, cleaning up trash around the country for 300 baht per day.

It would be nice if these forums actually educate citizens not a propaganda tool to get voters to vote and bash the opposition.
