Northbound roads congested

All roads leading from Bangkok to the North and Northeast are congested as New Year holidaymakers leave the capital city for their home provinces.

Despite the heavy traffic, vehicles are still able to move, albeit slowly, police said on Saturday.

Pol Maj Gen Jirasant Kaewsaeng-ek, chief of the Traffic Police Division, said that inside the capital traffic was still normal except in the Pratunam area where people were shopping for the long holiday and New Year celebrations.

He said Phahon Yothin and Vibhavadi-Rangsit roads, the main routes to the North and Northeast, were reported to be heavily congested, as were the eastern and western parts of the ring road.
