Thaicom 6 satellite launch nears

Thaicom Plc, Thailand's sole satellite service provider, will launch its Thaicom 6 satellite in the first week of 2014 to support the burgeoning local broadcasting industry.

Built by the Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corporation, the broadcast satellite contains 26 transponders including 18 C-band and 8 Ku-band transponders.

California's Space Exploration Technologies Corporation will launch Thaicom 6 into the orbital slot of 78.5 degrees East.

The satellite is specially designed to service the country's broadcast industry, providing higher-quality digital TV and more high-definition channels.

The company said Thaicom 6 has been booked up to 66% of capacity.
