B10m crystal meth bust in Chiang Mai

Immigration police on Wednesday night arrested a woman and seized 3 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, or ya ice, worth about ten million baht at Chiang Mai international airport.

She was identified as Chutima Boonsam-ang, 23, a resident of tambon Sobtui in Lampang’s Muang district.

Pol Lt-Col Udom Suwanleka, deputy chief of immigration police at Chiang Mai airport, said he received information that illegal drugs would be smuggled into Chiang Mai from Macao by a passenger on Air Asia flight FD2953. He ordered a close watch on passengers’ luggage.

Police x-rayed Ms Chutima's bags and found the crystal methamphetamine hidden inside eight cans of pet food and chocolate.

Miss Chutima said she had no knowledge f the drugs. She had just visited her parents in Malaysia and travelled to Macao as a tourist. In Macao a Chinese man, a relative of her friend, gave her the canned animal feed and chocolate. She said she did not know about the drugs inside them.

Police charged Miss Chutima with possessing illicit drugs for sale and sent her to Phuping police station for legal processing.
