Sornsak Sansombat, the department’s director-general, said he had asked the boat operators, Chao Phraya Express Boat Co and Krobkrua Khonsong Co, to add more boats and increase the frequency of their express and canal boat services to facilitate commuters next Monday when several major roads would be blocked by the protesters.
Additional boat services would be available at seven major piers expected to handle a massive increase in the number of commuters on that day. The seven piers are Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, Rama V, Rama VII, Kiakkai, Wanglang and Sathon.
The department would set up two more temporary boat routes from Dao Khanong to Sathon and from Big C Rat Burana to Sathon.
Mr Sornsak said he also asked Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) to arrange buses at the piers to take passengers to nearby bus stops and BTS Skytrain stations.
He urged the public wanting more information to call 1199 which is the department’s hotline centre and open 24 hours.
