The programme has been running for several years as a pilot project, with volunteers working to help mediate disputes arising between tourists and local business operators.
Eighteen Thais and 36 foreigners of 16 nationalities are working as volunteers, Phuket tourist police chief Urumporn Khundechsumrit said on Tuesday.
The foreigners include Russian, Indian, German, British, South Korean and Moroccan nationals, Pol Maj Urumporn said.
The volunteers will assist regular tourist police at Phuket's main tourist spots such as Phuket international airport, Patong tourist police station and Bangla Road, he said.
All tourist police volunteers are required to undergo criminal background checks, Pol Maj Urumporn said.
