Thai drug smuggler jailed in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH - A Thai national and a Peruvian have been sentenced to 25 years in jail on conviction of smuggling cocaine into Cambodia.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court handed down its sentence on Promkhot Phattarawadee, 31, and Corro Zuzunaga Enrique Bruno, 54, for smuggling 2.9 kilogrammes of the drugs, the Phnom Penh Post reported on Wednesday.

The two, who are detained at Prey Sar prison, were fined 25 million riel (206,000 baht) each, presiding judge Kor Vandy told the newspaper.

Promkhot was arrested on May 9, 2012 at Lucky Guesthouse in Phnom Penh district, two days after Bruno was arrested at Phnom Penh International Airport with 10 metal tubes filled with cocaine from Venezuela.

Cambodian anti-drug police asked Bruno call Promkhot to confirm delivery and then arrested the Thai woman too.
