Cockle spats bound for Thailand seized

Malaysian authorities have arrested three people trying to smuggle almost six tonnes of cockle spats to Thailand.

The Anti-Smuggling Unit in Perlis state seized a truck carrying the spats worth about 382,000 ringgit (3.8 million baht) near Alor Star in Kedah state on Tuesday, the New Straits Times reported on Wednesday.

The detained driver and two assistants said they were hired to deliver the produce in 191 gunny sacks from Perak to Thailand, acting unit chief Assistant Superintendent Bahari Ahmad said.

Cockle spats from Malaysia can sell for as much as five times the price in Thailand.

Man, you can smuggle just about anything around here. Is someone smuggling the dipping sauce from Lao PDR to go with these tasty bivalves?
