Red shirts call Monday rallies

Pro-government rallies have been called in other parts of the country as the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) stages its Bangkok shutdown.

"On Monday we plan rallies in 50 provinces nationwide excluding only the capital and the South," said Tida Thavornseth, chairwoman of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship.

But Ms Tida said the red shirt movement, which led the anti-government protests in Bangkok in 2010 that led to bloody street clashes claiming at least 92 lives, would avoid direct confrontation with their opponents.

There has been violence just outside northern Bangkok in the past week, as red shirt and anti-government protesters vied for popular support.

They should get ready- they'll be needed soon if the country is to avoid this "people's council" bizarre idea.
