B150m drug seizure in Chiang Mai

Police on Wednesday stopped a pickup truck and seized 500,000 methamphetamine pills, or ya ba, and three kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, or ya ice, worth an estimated 150 million baht on the street, in Chiang Mai’s Muang district.

Deputy chief of Police Region 5 Chamnarn Ruadrew said authorities pursued the bronze coloured vehicle after they were tipped off that illicit drugs were being smuggled into the area from the border in Chiang Rai province.

The driver stopped to refuel at a pump station, and police moved to cut off the vehicle's exit. The driver fired shots from a gun and sped away.

The driver abandoned the vehicle on the outer ring road and fled on foot. The police seized the drugs, said Pol Maj Gen Chamnarn. The driver made good his escape.

Police suspected the drugs were to be distributed next month on Valentine’s Day, because they were all pink, the deputy police chief said.

Pol Maj Gen Chamnarn said the drugs were thought to have been shipped by a network run by Hmong tribal people in Nan province. Police were investigating.

The seized drugs were taken to Mae Ping police station in Muang district, he added.

Over the 45 years I have been coming to Thailand when the driver is gone it usually is a "paid" flight. That said who knows as nothing in Thailand is what it seems. why day90hubby do you think Thaksin and his party is trying so hard to get the amnesty bill passed. He is a wanted crim but not for murder. In 2008 Thaksin Shinawatra was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in absentia over a corrupt land deal. The fact that over 2,000 people died with out trial under his tenure is history.

Driver fired shots from a gun and sped away. Even in NZ the driver would have escaped the police block. As you know Chiang-Mai has no police helicopters on call or 10 available police cars with tracker dogs. Your comment wanted criminal is nothing but imaginary hearsay, any wanted criminal causing death would be extradited internationally back to Thailand, "so something's are just not true"?

"Driver runs off" right! normal practice for the ruling family, bust some drugs to take minds off the BKK fiasco. Her criminal brother (also a police man) ordered the deaths of thousands during his corrupt time as PM. A wanted criminal pulling the strings and plunging our country into chaos is just unacceptable.
