Poll: 20% of city residents joined rallies

Eighty percent of the polled Bangkokians said they had not taken any part in the Bangkok shutdown campaign by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) between Jan 13 and 15, Nida Poll reported on Friday.

The pollster said 19.90% of them admitted they had participated in the shutdown rallies to pressure caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her cabinet members to step down.

Nida Poll, of the National Institute of Development Administration, said it surveyed Bangkok residents on  “Bangkokians and the shutdown”, interviewing 1,975 people on Jan 15 and 16.

Asked which rally sites they joined, 21.47% of the respondents who admitted taking part said Pathumwan intersection, 20.94% of them pointed to Ratchaprasong intersection, 14.66% said Victory Monument, 13.26% said Lat Phrao intersection, 11.87% said Asoke intersection, 9.95% said Lumpini Park, 4.36% said Chaeng Wattana road near Vibhavadi Rangsit road and 3.49% said Chaeng Wattana road in front of the Department of Special Investigation.

Bangkok has an official population of 8,249,117 residents, while the greater Bangkok area contains some 14,565,520 - according to the 2010 Census.

Against this you need to remember that in a recent poll the majority supported the pro-reform protests.
Discussion 2 : 18/01/2014 at 01:51 AM
so 80%(the margority) did not take part at all, so your protests are not working suthep, so pack your bags up and go home to Phuket, I wonder how many where paid to come up from the south and sutheps province too ?
Discussion 3 : 17/01/2014 at 07:51 PM
Only 20% participated. Many, like my family, are not able to participate. So the percentage actually supporting this protest is for sure much higher.
Discussion 4 : 17/01/2014 at 05:48 PM
so it would appear the very minor majority dont want SP utopia
Discussion 5 : 17/01/2014 at 01:49 PM
[Corrected] 14.5 million * 20% * 20.94% Pathumwan = 600k protestors in the MBK photo it covers 25,000 m2 max = 24 people per square meter which is impossible. A dense crowd is about 2 per square meter so Nida are off by a factor of 10 or more, i.e. < 2% took part, but I know they were bused in, because my neighbors went, so the percentage of BKK people is a lot smaller.

But le3ss than 5 million in Bangkok can vote.
Discussion 7 : 17/01/2014 at 01:08 PM
Only 20% of Bangkok residents participated in Bangkok Shutdown, but if Bangkoks official population is 8million, 20% is still 1.6million people... If 20% of 12million, then its 2.4million people... But still, Suthep cannot say "the people" support him of its only 20%... from iPhone application.
Discussion 8 : 17/01/2014 at 01:00 PM
So "the people" have not spoken. Time to call a halt to this ridiculous charade. from iPhone application.

20% of Bangkok plus, say, 10% of the greater bits totals about 2.3 million, but not all at the same time. Also, presumably only adults were polled, which would bring the numbers down a bit. Add the significant upcountry element and the numbers seem in the ballpark. Whichever way you look at it, that's a lot of people taking time out of their daily lives.
Discussion 10 : 17/01/2014 at 12:20 PM
So 1.6 million hold 66 million to ransom. "There is no win win - either I win or you win" great attitude to be endearing to the youth of Thailand.
Discussion 11 : 17/01/2014 at 12:20 PM
I will assume that it means 80% have been inconvenience by their rallies and protests.
Discussion 12 : 17/01/2014 at 12:14 PM
20% = 2,000,000 joim rally then "COOL"
