EC chief to meet PM Tuesday

Election Commission chairman Supachai Somcharoen and caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to discuss the fate of the Feb 2 poll.

The meeting follows the Constitution Court's ruling on Friday that a poll can be deferred. The court also said the decision to delay the vote rested with the EC and the government leader.

The meeting was arranged after talks between the EC chief and caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana on Saturday on the eve of advance voting.

The future of the advance voting on Sunday still looks uncertain.

EC commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said in Surat Thani that the poll organising body was ready to postpone advance voting until Friday if the caretaker government signals its intention to put off the general election.

The EC is authorised under the election law to set a new date for advance voting.

It will be a very important meeting which will provide Ms Yingluck with a great opportunity to turn the tables on her opponents by agreeing to postpone the election to new date within the next three months, as requested by the EC, with an absolute minimum or preferably no pre-conditions.

Flash news release: A tearful Yingluk emerges from the EC meeting late Tuesday and says , if there was more time she would cancel the election but now there is no time to do it sob sob. When turning from the camera Yingluck was caught giving a big fist pump and grinning. She was overhead saying to someone on the way out, did I do a number on them or what. This is so predictable we should run a pool on how long the crocodile tears will flow.
