Angry farmers block Asian Highway

Farmers from the central provinces of Chai Nat, Ang Thong, Singburi, Suphanburi and Pathum Thani are blocking the Asian Highway in Ang Thong to pressure the caretaker government to pay them for rice sold into its subsidy scheme, reports said.

The rice growers, led by Songpol Poolsawasdi, president of Ang Thong Agricultural Council, used farm trucks to block the main highway to the north at kilometre marker 67 in tambon Chaiphum of Ang Thong’s Chaiyo district.

Mr Songpol said on Thursday that farmers will continue to block the Asian Highway until they are paid the money owed to them.

Tables have been set up at the rally site to collect complaints from unpaid farmers in order to file lawsuits against the caretaker government for failing to make rice payments as promised, he said.
