Ping-pong bomb kills student

BANGKOK - An engineering student was killed when a fleeing gang of motorcycle thieves threw a ping-pong bomb at him in Pathum Thani on Tuesday during a street chase.

Natthasit Sakhornpaiboon, 19, a student at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, sustained serious injuries to his chest in the attack and was pronounced dead by police.

His friend Kittisak Samranpanit, 19, told police that he and Natthasit gave chase to the  gang after learning that three members  had tried to steal his motorcycle parked at a dormitory in Pathum Thani’s Khlong Luang district.

Riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by Natthasit, Mr Kittisak said he and his friend were catching up with the trio in front of Wat Wanboon on Klong Hok Road when one of the three gang members hurled the home-made bomb at them.

Police were hunting the gang.
