Emergency law extended in far South

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the extension of the emergency decree in three southernmost border provinces for another three months, National Security Council (NSC) chief Paradorn Pattanatabut said.

The extension period is from March 20-June 19.

Asked about the emergency decree in Bangkok and three nearby provinces which is due to expire on March 23, Lt Gen Paradorn said it would likely not be extended because of three factors: the Civil Court's order restricting the enforcement of the decree, the improving situation, and calls from the private sector which said the law had affected tourism and investment.

However, the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) would take time to assess the situation.  If the CMPO proposed that the emergency law should not be extended in Bangkok and nearby provinces, the prime minister had the power to immediately do as advised, said the NSC chief.
