Pornthep Thesakit, 24, was found dead lying on the ground next to a taxi at 5.45am in front of Ratchadapisek Soi 14. He had been shot in the chest. A woman, later identified as Ratree Komleam, was also found injured. She had been shot in the stomach and was taken to hospital by rescue workers.
Suthisarn police inspected the scene and found 15 bullet shells, according to FM.91 Trafficpro's Facebook page.
Bodin Phoprasert, a friend of the deceased, said he, Pornthep and three others had gone out for the evening at an entertainment parlor in the area.
According to Mr Bodin, his party got into argument with another group of young people. Pornthep attempted to drive off in his car but was chased by youths on two motorbikes. Mr Bodin said Pornthep fired a gun in the direction of the youths, which prompted them to return the gunshots that killed the 24-year-old.
His group hailed a taxi to take Pornthep to hospital, but he died before getting in the car.
Pornthep’s friends admitted to hiding their gun in a condominium construction site near the scene. The attackers fled.
The incident caused heavy traffic jams on Ratchadapisek Road, a busy commuter route into central Bangkok. Road users were advised to use alternative routes. Traffic cleared across all lanes by 9am.
