The accident occurred as Mr Abhisit was leaving the house to attend the celebration of the 44th anniversary of the founding of Channel 3 television station.
He was admitted to Ramathibodi Hospital and doctors said they would operate this evening to reset the fractured collarbone.
Mr Abhisit had cancelled all his activities scheduled for Thursday. It was not known how long he would stay in hospital, Mr Chavanond said.
Despite Mr Abhisit's accident, the Democrat Party's annual assembly set for March 28 and 29 at the Miracle Grand Hotel will go ahead as scheduled, he added.
Dr Pornchai Mulpruek, of the hospital's orthopaedics department, said treatment would involve metal plates being attached to the outside of Mr Abhisit's broken collarbone. He would probably be discharged from hospital in two or three days.
Mr Abhisit told reporters at the hospital that he was in good spirits despite the injury.
"I think my legs went weak after Manchester United lost 3-0 to Manchester City last night," the former premier, who is a Newcastle fan, joked.
