Pol Lt Wanchai Rakboonmuang said the attack occurred about midday when Sub-Lt Muhamad Tale and Sgt Natkit Luprommam, both of Infantry Company 15131 of Narathiwat Task Force 30, were returning to their base in a car from a ceremony to give certificates to kindergarten school children in Ban Lahan, tambon Samakkhi.
A bomb was planted on the road to Ban Bango Kute was detonated by militants hidden on the side of the road when the car passed over it.
Sgt Natkij, who was driving the car for Sub-Lt Muhamad, said the blast struck the vehicle and shrapnel wounded his superior in the face. He suffered chest pains but was still able to speed awa , fearing he would be shot by the militants. He was able to take Sub-Lt Muhamad to Rueso Hospital.
The car was heavily damaged by the bomb.
Explosive ordnance disposal police who examined the scene said the bomc comprised a gas cylinder weighing 90-100kg with an electrical wire connecting it to roadside forest. The explosion caused a large hole on the road.
