Obama to begin Asia trip in Japan

US President Barack Obama arrives in Tokyo on April 23 to begin a four-country Asian trip, marking his first visit to Japan since 2010.

Mr Obama will stay in Japan from April 23-25, chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga said in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Mr Obama will meet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Emperor Akihito.

Mr Obama will stop in South Korea on April 25-26 where he will discuss ways to counter the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear arms programme with South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Mr Park's office said in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Obama will also visit Malaysia for the first time as president on April 26-28.

The US president will then spend April 28-29 in the Philippines where he will meet President Benigno Aquino, Charles Jose, the Philippine Foreign Affairs Department spokesman, said by phone.
