Songkran toll: 277 killed, 2,926 injured

Twenty-nine people were killed and 283 injured in 273 accidents on Wednesday, the sixth of the "seven dangerous days" (April 11-17) of the Songkran festival, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Thursday.

The greatest number of the accidents on Wednesday were caused by drunk driving. 

Wednesday's figures brought the number of people killed and injured in the first six days, April 11-16, to 277, down by nine from the same period of last year, and 2,926 (up by 143) respectively in 2,754 accidents (up 173 cases). 

The six-day figures show Nakhon Ratchasima had the largest number of fatalities (13).

Chiang Mai province has the highest accumulated number of accidents at 107.
