Speeding SUV kills 3 police

A speeding sport utility vehicle (SUV) ran through a police checkpoint on Boromratchonnanee road, ran up on the footpath and hit two parked cars, killing three policemen and injuring three others, on Sunday night.

The incident occurred around 11pm Sunday when a Pajero travelling at high speed ran through a security checkpoint on the road in front of Boonthavorn store manned by Bangkok Metropolitan Police region 7.

The Pajero then careered into two cars parked in the store compound. The driver Navaporn Phetkaew, 25, was detained after the incident. Police said he had not been drinking alcohol but drove much too fast and lost the control of the vehicle.

Two policemen struck by the vehicle died at the scene and a third at a hospital.

The dead officers were Pol Sub Lt Anake Roonnoi, Pol L/C Yanyong Anand, Pol L/C Songpol Prommala. The injured policemen are Pol L/C Anuphong Khaomorakot, Pl L/C Thiwa Klinbuakaew and Pol L/C Chalermrat Srithon. They all are from Thaling Chan police station.

Pol Lt Col Wichien Saengpitak, deputy superintendent at Thaling Chan police station, said the incident occurred during a work break so the police manning the checkpoint were taking rest in a tent erected on the footpath. The SUV ran up onto the footpath and into the men and the two parked vehicles.
