Thailand suffer loss at Asian Cup

Thailand lost 4-0 to South Korea for their second successive defeat at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday.

In the other Group B game, China defeated Myanmar 3-0 as the Chinese and South Korea advance to the 2015 World Cup to be held in Canada.

The top two teams of each of the two groups at the Asian Cup progress to next year’s World Cup while the two third-placed sides meet in a play-off for the other spot.

Thailand will take on Myanmar in the final group game tomorrow with the winners facing the third-placed team from Group A, which is likely to be Vietnam or Jordan.

Thanks to their superior goal difference, Thailand need only a draw against Myanmar to reach the play-off round.

Thailand defeated Myanmar on penalties in the sem-finals on their way to winning the SEA Games gold medal last year.

If the Thais are successful, they will become the first Thai side to qualify for the World Cup at the senior level.

In last night’s action, Ji So Yun opened the scoring after 11 minutes and Park Eun Sun made it 2-0 a minute later.

Park scored her second goal and her team’s third two minutes after the interval and completed a hat-trick five minutes from time.

In the final moments, the lights at Thong Nhat stadium went out for a few minutes before the match resumed.
