Physics Olympiad gold for Thai pupil

A Thai secondary school student has won a gold medal at the 15th Asian Physics Olympiad in Singapore, according to the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology.

Possawee Manakul, from Mahidol Wittayanusorn school in Nakhon Pathom province, won the gold in the academic competition which ended on Sunday. Eight Thai students, half of them from Possawee’s school, took part in the competition, which had 27 participating teams from Asian countries including Australia and Russia. 

China grabbed eight gold medals, five more than runner-up Singapore, followed by Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand which won a gold each. 

Another seven Thai students received three silvers, three bronzes and an honourable mention. They are from Triam Udom Suksa, Suankularb Wittayalai, Samsen Wittayalai, Chulaporn Ratchawittayalai and Mahidol Wittayanusorn.

The Thai representatives will arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 1.45pm Monday.
