Acting on a tip, the officers searched Natenapa Gibson, 32, after she disembarked from a Sichuan Airlines flight from Chengdu in western China at 2am.
They found a total of 2,370 grammes of ya ice hidden in 11 packets inside her six women’s handbags, said Paisarn Chuanjit, deputy director-general of the Customs Department.
Mrs Natenapa, a native of Si Sa Ket province, told the officers that an African man whom she met at a pub in Krabi early this year hired her to smuggle the drugs from China to Thailand for 80,000 baht. She was committing the crime for the second time when she was apprehended.
The suspect said she did it because she needed money to feed her two children after breaking up with a foreign husband.
She was charged with possessing a category one drug and carrying it into Thailand without permission, Mr Paisarn said.
