Highway police enforcing law

Highway police are strictly enforcing road laws in nearby Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Prakan provinces to help ease traffic congestion in Bangkok, Highway Police Division chief Pongsith Saengphet said on Monday.

Pol Maj Gen Pongsith said a major trouble spot where action must be taken immediately to improve traffic flow is the out-bound section between kilometre markers 12-17 on Highway 34 (Bang Na-Trat), where there is an entrance ramp to the east-bound expressway with few toll gates and several U-turns.

On Highway 7 (the Bangkok - Chon Buri motorway), the Lat Krabang and Phan Thong toll gates have chronic traffic jams, he said.

Passenger vans also linger in front of the Home Pro store during the weekend, causing congestion.  The problem will be solved through strict enforcement of the law, Pol Maj Gen Pongsith said.

The Highway Police chief said he has ordered police patrol cars, each with one officer and a digital camera be posted every 50 kilometres on all highways leading to Bangkok to take pictures of speeding vehicles.

On Rama 2 road alone, as many as 100 trucks were caught violating the speed and weight limits every month, he added.
