May auto exports pick up, sales slump

Auto exports totalled 94,788 units, up 9.02% from the same month last year and 35.79% from the previous month.

Total export value was 45.55 billion baht during the month, the Federation of Thai Industries announced on Wednesday.

For the first five months of the year, exports totalled 456,101 units, up 2.94% on year, bringing in 214.96 billion baht, up 8.73% year-on-year.

Total output in May tumbled 36.08% year-on-year to 148,201 units due to the high base in 2013 when the first-time car buyer scheme was running.

The number, however, rose by 16.94% from the previous month since April has several holidays. These brought the number of auto output from January to May to 792,423 units, down 29.49% year-on-year.

Domestic sales in May fell 37.7% on year and 4.88% from the previous month (see chart) due to the economic slowdown triggered by politics and the delays of rice-pledging payments and infrastructure projects.
