12kg gold seized at Suvarnabhumi

A South Korean man has been arrested while attempting to smuggle 12 kilogrammes of gold worth 16 million baht out of Thailand, officials said.

At Suvarnabumi airport on Tuesday, Park Sukman, 67, who had already been cleared for boarding a Thai Airways International flight TG656 to Seoul, was taken into custody after customs officials and police, acting on information, found the metal ingots in his luggage.

He was taken for a thorough search at the airport's customs office.

The officials found 12 one-kilogramme gold bars and a gem-like orange object in his luggage, with a combined value estimated at 16 million baht.

Mr Park was later charged with attempted smuggling.
