Centre to keep records of taxi drivers

The Land Transport Department has set up a centre to build a database of public transport drivers to improve road safety.

Initially, some 2,000 taxi operators in Bangkok will be asked to fill in the personal records of their drivers, as well as their work experiences and accident records, Asdsathai Rattanadilok Na Phuket, director general of the Land Department, told ThaiPBS.

These data will be linked with the departments's database, he said.

The operators, however, feel the database will be impractical, partly because some of them lack the understanding of IT and do not recognise the importance of record-keeping.

Besides, drivers who rent taxis from them tend to switch camps so often it will be hard to keep the database up-to-date.

They admit many of them do not check criminals records when recruiting.

Of 101,000 taxis i Bangkok, 60,000 had public transport driver's licences.
