Couple nabbed for rice theft

AYUTTHAYA – Police have arrested a couple for allegedly stealing 16 tonnes of packed rice that they were hired to deliver to a distribution centre in March.

Ayutthaya police apprehended Sawai Phanthom, 54, and his wife Saowanee Muslem, 30, at a house in Phak Hai district based on an arrest warrant issued by Samut Prakan court.

The warrant alleged Mr Sawai was hired to drive a truck loaded with packed rice weighing 16 tonnes belong to Capital Trading Co in Samut Prakan to a hypermarket's warehouse in Wang Noi district on March 3, but the truck and the rice never arrived.

Police said the couple confessed to stealing only three tonnes of the rice and selling it for 30,000 baht. The rest they left with the truck at a gasoline station on Bang Na-Trat Road. Police went to the station, but found no truck.

Mr Sawai was jailed for stealing property belonging to his boss in 2007 and was released from prison in 2012.
