Police were called to a three-storey townhouse on Sappasitthi Road in Muang district of Ubon late Monday after receiving a call via the 191 emergency hotline that a foreigner who lived there may have committed suicide.
A paramedic team and police found the body of the 60-year-old American national hanging by a rope from the handrail of a staircase leading to the building's second floor.
Pol Maj Som-arj Cantao, a district police investigator, said the dead man's friend called the 191 hotline centre about 11.30pm Monday after he could not contact the university English teacher.
The caller said his friend posted a photo of himself with a rope tied to the handrail of a staircase, along with the goodbye message "see ya" on his Facebook page at 10.52pm. He could not be reached after that.
The friend feared his friend intended to hang himself and asked police to check on him.
There were no signs of foul play and no sign of a struggle, Pol Maj Som-arj said.
The man's death appeared to be suicide. He had been taking medication regularly for depression and recently had an argument with a friend over a personal matter. Other details were not clear.
