Calumny charge against M-79 suspect

Aree Krainara, leader of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship's security guards, on Thursday filed a defamation complaint with the Crime Suppression Division against one of the seven suspects in the deadly M-79 grenade attack in front of Big C store on Ratchadamri road on Feb 23.

Mr Aree said the suspect, Chatchawal Prabbamrung, had falsely implicated him in the attack.

Mr Chatchawal told police afterhe was arrested that he and his colleagues had been hired to make the attack by a man called Tom, who claimed to be a subordinate of Mr Aree.

Mr Aree said he did not know "Tom" or any of the seven suspects in the case. He had checked, and this man "Tom" was not on the list of UDD security guards, he said.

Mr Chatchawal's mentioning of his name had damaged his reputation, he said.

In the complaint, Mr Aree also accused Manager ASTV, Naew Na and Thai Post newspapers of defamation in  publishing Mr Chatchawal's accusation, and also an individual named as Akorn Nakhonkulchet who posted comment on his Facebook page.

Pol Gen Prasopchoke Prommun, the CSD deputy commander, accept the complaint for further investigation.

Three  shoppers, including  two children, were killed in the Feb 23 grenade explosion, and many other people wounded.
