Plan to send workers to Libya shelved

Unrest in Libya has forced the Labour Ministry to freeze a plan to send more Thai workers to the northern African country.

The Thai embassy in Tripoli has advised against sending more Thais to the country due to the fighting in Libya, deputy director-general of the Consular Affairs Department Prasittiporn Wetprasit said on Friday.

The Consular Affairs Department of the Foreign Ministry held a meeting with the Employment Department of the Labour Ministry on Friday.

They instead focused on measures to evacuate Thai labourers in Libya, Israel, Iraq and Kenya if the situations in the four countries worsen.

There are 1,500 Thai workers in Libya, 27,000 in Israel, 40 in Iraq and 30 in Kenya.

Mr Prasittiporn said although Libya was the riskiest country of the four, no Thai desired to leave the country.

Seven Thais returned from Israel on their holiday leave, the official added.
