CSD calls for Veera indictment

Crime Suppression Division police Tuesday recommended that Veera Somkwamkid, coordinator of the Thai Patriots Network, be indicted for his role in the People's Alliance for Democracy shutdown of Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports in 2008.

Mr Veera returned to Thailand from Cambodia July 2 after being released from Prey Sar prison on a royal pardon.  He was sentenced to eight months imprisonment for spying and had served three years and six months in jail.

On his return, he was immediately taken to the CSD headquarters to hear charges related to the airport seizures. CSD officers Tuesday handed over their investigation report and Mr Veera to the Office of the Attorney General with their indictment recommendation.

Phuangthip Boonsanong, Mr Veera's lawyer, said he would ask his client be released on bail.

The charges filed against Mr Veera by the CSD include illegal assembly of 10 or more people, inciting unrest, intrusion of the airports and violation of the emergency decree in effect then.
