Chiang Mai to 'select' local councillors

Chiang Mai will be the first province to select the members of local administrations on Aug 4, as required by the National Council for Peace and Order's announcement No 85/2557, according to provincial governor Suriya Prasartbandhit.

Mr Suriya said they are the Tambon Rim Nua Municipality Council and the Tambon Wiang Phrao Municipality Council. The terms of members of the two council are about to expire.

Under the NCPO's announcement, elections to replace members of local bodies and administrators whose terms end during this time are cancelled and the vacant seats are to be filled by people chosen by selection committees chaired by the provincial governor.

Mr Suriya said that committees have been set up to select members of the two municipality councils and the selections will be made on Aug 4.

Two-thirds of the selected individuals must be current or former government officials at C-8 level or better.
