Women-only train carriages from Aug 1

Special passenger carriages for women and children only will be included on trains operating on three main routes from Aug 1, according to a State Railway of Thailand announcement.

The special carriage will be a second class air-conditioned car and second-class sleeping car on three routes.  Boys under 10 years old and no taller than 150cm can also travel on these coaches.

The special service is available on special express trains Nos 1 and 2 (Bangkok - Chiang Mai - Bangkok) on the northern route; express trains No 67 and 68 (Bangkok - Ubon Ratchathani - Bangkok) and express trains Nos 69 and 70 (Bangkok - Nong Khai - Bangkok) on the northeastern route; and special express trains Nos 37 and 38 (Bangkok - Sungai Kolok - Bangkok) on the southern route.

The service is aimed to ensure the safety and convenience of passengers following the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl by an SRT staff member on an overnight train from Surat Thani to Bangkok earlier this month.
