Thai food chain in KL eyes Australia

A popular Thai restaurant chain in Malaysia is targeting Australia as its first overseas expansion project.

My Elephant plans talks next year to gain a foothold in Australia, co-founder and managing director Patrick Cheng told Bernama news agency on Thursday.

Mr Cheng did not disclose his preferred city where the restaurant would open.

"To go overseas, we need to find out the local considerations such as legal frameworks, hygiene laws and accounting measures. This will take us more time," he told the official Malaysian news agency.

My Elephant made its debut in Petaling Jaya on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in 2007 by offering northern Thai food, setting itself apart from other food outlets from Thailand which mainly offer southern food. It has now expanded to four more locations around the Malaysian capital.
