NCPO speeds farm zoning plan

The National Council for Peace and Order wants government agencies to push forward plans to rezone the country’s agricultural sector to avoid oversupply and improve soil quality.

NCPO chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha instructed agencies Tuesday to accelerate their zoning plans, which he believes will effectively combat oversupply of certain crops, including rice and rubber. Alternatives would include tapioca and maize, spokesman Col Winthai Suwari said.

The Interior Ministry has been assigned to survey areas of irrigated and non-irrigated zones in each province to determine the best crops. The general wants agencies to inform farmers of the zone determinations in advance so they can plan accordingly.

Another benefit of zoning, Col Winthai said, would be the promotion of the benefits of crop rotation, which will preserve and enhance soil quality.
