Turks nabbed in credit card scam

UDON THANI - Two Turkish nationals were arrested on Thursday after using fake credit cards to withdraw cash from two banks in the northeastern province.

Cagdas Kuvayda, 27, and Suzer Esref, 43, were caught at a hotel in Muang district with nine fake credit cards, 10,000 baht in cash, a skimmer and two notebook computers, Detnarong Sutthchanbancha, acting chief of the Provincial Police Region 4, said.

The cards bear the name of banks in Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland and Norway.

Police began looking for the two after alerts from Kasikornbank and Krungsri Bank in Udon Thani about the use of fake credit cards to withdraw money from their ATM machines. Footage from security cameras installed at the machines showed the same persons taking out money from the machines, Pol Lt Gen Detnarong said.

Mr Kuvayda entered Thailand at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday and took a flight from Bangkok to Udon Thani to join his friend, the officer said.

Mr Kuvayda said he brought a skimmer with him from Turkey to produce more fake cards in Thailand with information hacked in Europe to be sent by other accomplices in Turkey by e-mail, he added.
