Newcastle, Villa end scoreless

BIRMINGHAM: Aston Villa remained undefeated two games into their Barclays Premier League season with a scoreless draw against Newcastle United at Villa Park on Saturday.

The visitors, who lost their opening match to champions Manchester City last weekend, had been hoping to continue their mastery over Villa, who had not defeated Newcastle in six matches, including two losses last season.

More worrisome for manager Alan Pardew, though, was the fact that Newcastle have yet to score this season.

The Magpies came close with barely a minute of normal time remaining, when Dutch midfielder Siem de Jong let fly from close range only for American goalkeeper Brad Guzan to block the shot.

Villa skipper Paul Lambert said before the match that he also wanted to see more goals this season from his side, especially from Austrian forward Andreas Weimann, who scored the only goal in last weekend's away win at Stoke City.

Newcastle finished the match with 10 men as Michael Williamson was sent off after a second yellow card for a nasty foul in injury time.
