Drugs, porn found in temple raid

CHON BURI — Authorities arrested a monk and a layman and seized weapons, drugs and pornographic DVDs from a Buddhist temple in Si Racha district Tuesday.

A team of police and military officers raided Wat Huay Prab in Moo 3 village of tambon Bor Win in the afternoon. The operation came after residents complained to district chief Wichai Sampantharat that monks at the temple allegedly consumed methamphetamines.

Phra Yuthana and Sitthasak Sriboon, a layman working as a driver at the monastery, tested positive for use of methamphetamines and were taken into custody.

Police combed all of the monks' rooms and found five methamphetamine pills, porn movies, 14 knives, a homemade .38 pistol, a .22 calibre rifle and several BB guns, along with .45 and .38 ammunition. They also discovered drug paraphernalia in the temple's basement.

Officers tested 21 monks and novices, finding two had used drugs.

Abbot Phra Kru Paisarn Santitham was at a religious ceremony in Ratchaburi when authorities raided the premises. Officials were questioning the monks how they obtained all the illegal items.
