Senior cop moved after gambling raid

The superintendent of San Patong district police has been transferred to the provincial police headquarters in Chiang Mai province for an indefinite period for allowing a gambling house to operate in an area under his responsibility, Thairath Online reported.

The transfer of Pol Col Somphot Sonkanok followed a raid on a house at Village Group 1 in tambon Ban Klang of Chiang Mai's San Patong district early on Wednesday.

A team of police and soldiers from Kawila camp descended on the house about 12.30am following a tip-off.

They rounded up 36 gamblers - 21 men and 15 women - and seized three sets of dice and other  equipment used for the gambling game high-low, and an amount of cash, as evidence.

Pol Maj Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapat, acting chief of the Chiang Mai provincial police, said this was the second raid in San Patong district since he issued an order that police must not allow gambling in areas under their responsibility.

He had ordered the transfer of Pol Col Somphot, the San Patong police chief, to the provincial police headquarters for an indefinite period.
