18-wheel truck kills motorcyclist

A motorcycle driver was killed and two men in luxury sedan injured in an accident involving an 18-wheel truck carrying two heavy containers in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province, police said.

Pol Lt Niyomrung Mungmuang, an investigator of Bang Kaew police station, said the accident occurred about 5pm Monday in the out-bound lanes of King Kaew road near a U-turn in front of a Siam Commercial Bank branch office in tambon Rachathewa.

Jakrapan Thobuddee, the driver of an 18-wheel truck running at a high speed, lost control of the vehicle.

The truck swirved across the road median strip into the oncoming lane and hit a motorcycle. The centrifugal force dislodged one of the two containers, weighing about 25 tonnes, which slid off and fell on to a Mercedes Benz car.

Maitree Thongtha, the motorcycle driver, was seriously injured.  He was rushed to Chularat 9 Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Benz was damaged.  The driver, Prasit Chamwat, and the passenger Wang Wanapraison, 63, were injured.
