It difficult to be a fish farmer when your river begins to dry up. That is the problem facing villagers near the Moon River in Buri Ram province as a severe drought continues in the area.

No water, no fish

A fish-basket setup during normal times.

There is something wrong with the photo above. That piece of equipment that you see should be floating in the water. The nets should be attached to it and there should be fish inside them (See photo to the right).

The photo was taken next the Moon River in Buri Ram’s Satuk district where the villagers earn their living through what is known as "fish-basket farming".

This year, however, a severe drought has dried up many sections of the river. Much of the water that remains has become stagnant and unfit for fish. Thus, fish farmers from about 30 villages in the area have had to temporarily abandon their equipment on the dry riverbed.

During the past year, the villagers say they have managed only a single harvest as opposed to three during a normal year. Many have had to look for work elsewhere.

Now they are asking the government for help. They want state agencies to dredge the river and construct weirs, small dams, to contain the water for their fish baskets.
