Test Yourself is where you can improve your reading skills. Whether it’s for tests like University Entrance Exams or IELTS and TOEFL, or even just for fun, these pages help you to read, understand and improve your English.

Read the following story by Parisa Pichitmarn from the Bangkok Post. Then, answer the questions that follow.

Phannapast Taychamaythakool (Yoon)’s vibrant illustrations of animals wearing Gucci clothes, which she uploaded on Instagram, caught the attention of Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele. This led to her becoming one of the brand’s featured artists last year.

NEW COLLECTION

This year, Yoon was approached once again to create a book of fairy tales which would be used to promote Gucci’s new collection of fine jewellery, Le Marché des Merveilles.

She decided to bring in her friend Aracha Cholitgul (Ossy), a fine arts classmate at Chulalongkorn University, to write the stories. The two friends are the first Thai artists to be commissioned to complete such a project. The result is a beautiful, gold-rimmed book featuring tales of animals and their adventures creating jewellery at the Wonder Factory.

EXCLUSIVE PACKAGE

The book is not available for public sale. Copies are exclusively given to guests attending launch events around the world. And in Thailand, sadly, neither the book nor the jewellery is available. But the two artists were happy to speak to us about how they brought their fantastic stories to life and what it was like to work with one of the biggest global fashion brands.

How can you tell what sort of images will work when it comes to fashion?

Yoon: Working in fashion teaches you how to manage your work and be creative. I used to try and make things look very realistic. But fashion needs a twist to make it more interesting. You can’t do something where everything is flat. There needs to be something that grabs you emotionally. My previous experience at Kloset taught me not to be too inflexible.

What are some other fashion brands that you’ve included in your illustrations?

Yoon: I’ve done Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu and Prada. I love how they do things differently. With Miu Miu and Prada, you don’t see a flawless model on the catwalk, but somebody unique and interesting. For Gucci, it was when Alessandro Michele became their creative director that I really fell in love with their clothes.

What guidelines did you follow in order to create your fairy tales?

Ossy: They didn’t give us any strict guidelines at all. They said it wasn’t even necessary to draw the jewellery in the story. The challenge was how to present Gucci and the jewellery collection without it coming across too strongly. The first inspiration was that they liked Yoon’s work, so we had to brainstorm what kind of stories would present her illustrations in the best way.
