Our pick of mooncakes that shine with flavours and packaging

It's that time of year to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival so we decided to round up mooncakes that are on offer from various venues in Bangkok. Here are some of the mooncakes that shine the brightest in terms of flavour and packaging. *The following mooncakes are available until Oct 4 unless stated otherwise.

Mooncakes by Pagoda at Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park comes in a golden trunk until Sep 30. Chef Oscar Pun and his team have created some very interesting flavours from Black truffle, roasted chestnut and smoked duck to Pork bak-kwah with assorted nuts. If you dig the sweet-and-savoury combos definitely check them out. They are available in big (170g) and small (80g) sizes. For something more delicate, there are several flavours of snow skin mooncakes including Chanthaburi durian with lotus seed paste and Mango and cheese. They are available in small size only.

The Pantry at W Bangkok may wow you with its unique take on mooncakes. Its daring flavours are Raspberry, Peanut butter, Japanese cheesecake and Banana chocolate but Durian is also available. Snow skin options for all the five flavours are also available. Buy at least four pieces and they will be neatly packed in a box wrapped in a beautiful scarf which you can sport later. W mooncakes will also be available at the "Mooncake Festival 2017" on the ground floor of Siam Paragon from Sep 15 – Oct 4 and the main floor of EmQuartier from Sep 26 – Oct 4.

Fei Ya at Renaissance Bangkok classes up their mooncakes with a beautiful packaging in the form of a golden handbag which opens to reveal a mini chest of two drawers. Chinese chef Leung Shing Hoi has crafted a variety of flavours for your indulgence, including Durian with egg yolk, Mixed nuts and red bean and Aroma white lotus seed.

Man Ho at JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok presents their mooncakes in a red-and-gold lantern box with ornate patterns. Pick your flavour of choice from varieties such as Durian with egg yolk, Lotus seed with egg yolk, Mixed nuts with egg yolk and date plum or Chinese jujube with egg yolk. After you're done eating the mooncakes, add a light bulb into a box and you'll just get yourself a new lamp!

For mooncakes to delight your geek friends, check out offerings from mx cakes & bakery. Its "Hong Kong MX Mooncakes" come in a box of cute Spider-man for Custard flavour or Iron Man for Green tea and red bean. They are available at all branches in Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, CentralPlaza Lardprao, CentralPlaza Bangna, CentralPlaza Pinklao and Park Ventures.

Call us sad but we kept the beautiful boxes that mooncakes from Liu (11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm), Conrad Bangkok's Chinese restaurant, came in. Golden custard and Classic durian are packed in a precious pigeon hole chest. CitiBank, SCB and KTC credit card holders receive 15% discount when they buy mooncakes before Sep 15.

Zing Bakery celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival with beautifully crafted mooncakes and several options for packaging. Choose from Coconut, Chocolate, Monthong durian paste with egg yolk, Green tea, Lotus seed paste with egg yolk and Red Bean paste with egg yolk and have them packed in a red faux-leathered box with drawer or a children's box with cute truck design. Find them at the bakery on the ground floor.

Silk Road (11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm) Cantonese Restaurant and The Bakery (7am-9pm) respectively on the third and lobby floor of Plaza Athénée Bangkok celebrates the harvest festival with four classic flavours. They are Monthong durian with egg yolk, Lotus seed with egg yolk, Mixed fruit with nuts and Pork bak-kwah with nuts. A box of four should already impress your recipient but they sure will be wowed when you present them with the hotel's signature handbag with nine pieces of mooncakes inside.

Mocha & Muffins (7am-8pm) at Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel offers delectable mooncakes in an elegant leather gift box. There are four flavours -- Durian with single yolk, Custard, Jujube with single yolk and Lotus seed with single yolk -- to choose from.

The Lounge on the first level of The St. Regis Bangkok presents the four flavours of their mooncakes in Imperial Red or Turquoise Blue decorative boxes. Enjoy Monthong durian, Chestnut and macadamia, Red bean with lotus seed or Mixed fruit with nuts.
