Saving sea turtles

First aid for a young sea turtle.

Known for watches equipped with a self-powered illumination system, Luminox puts the spotlight on sea turtles through its "Saving The Underwater World" project and a limited edition of 900 pieces featuring the gentle reptile.

In collaboration with The Mall Group, the launch of the Sea Turtle timepiece, priced at 12,900 baht, took place on Tuesday at Siam Paragon's Fashion Hall, where M Card members were first in line to purchase the piece with serial numbers running from 1 to 900.

The model, exclusive to Thailand, is inspired by the tragic story of Orm Sin (named after the Thai phrase for "piggy bank"), who departed her natural habitat and was left in a pool in Si Racha municipality.

The sea turtle was found sick, leading to surgery that removed over 900 coins weighing a total of 5kg from her stomach. She later died, after a second operation aimed at saving her from complications.

A blue sea turtle appears as a motif on the face of the Swiss-made Luminox XS 0321, and another sea turtle is engraved on the back of the case. Water-resistant to 100m, the 44mm model is housed in a light yet sturdy carbon compound case with a unidirectional rotating bezel. The self-powered illumination system, without the push of a button, ensures visibility in any condition for up to 25 years.

A portion of the watches' profits will go to the Endangered Marine Species Preservation Centre of Phuket under the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. The donation will support the purchase of medical equipment and supplies needed in saving the lives of sea turtles, manatees, dolphins and other marine creatures.
