Red Bull clan pay B3m to victim's kin

The family of a policeman who was killed in a hit-and-run involving Red Bull heir Vorayuth Yoovidhya has reached a compensation deal with the Red Bull clan.

Pol Lt Col Wiradol Thapthimdee, an investigator at Thong Lor police station responsible for the case, said the family of Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian Klanprasert have agreed to accept 3 million baht in compensation.

He said the payment has been made in a move which is seen as an attempt to avert a civil lawsuit.

Mr Vorayuth has been charged with hit-and-run and drink-driving after crashing into Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wichian with his Ferrari in the early hours of Sept 3 in Bangkok's Sukhumvit area.

Pol Lt Col Wiradol said the police investigators expect to conclude the probe against Mr Vorayuth at the end of this month.

He said police are waiting for details of the suspect's blood test results after traces of narcotics were found in his blood.

He said a fresh charge related to narcotics is likely to be pressed against the suspect.

Mr Vorayuth is a grandson of Chaleo Yoovidhya, the late founder of the Red Bull energy drink empire.

Why does family have to agree to settlement before criminal charges are laid and he has his day in court? I think lawyers threaten with long legal proceedings. What a cheap rich family. He will get off with a light fine 200,000 baht.
Discussion 2 : 26/09/2012 at 04:49 PM
Now we know the worth of a life of a police sergeant. 3 million baht is about 10 % of the price of the Ferrari and about 0.0018 % of the 2011 revenue of Red Bull.
Discussion 3 : 26/09/2012 at 04:36 PM
It's Carabao Deang for me from now on!
Discussion 4 : 26/09/2012 at 04:23 PM
If they accept the money, most likely they will reach an out of court settlement which includes asking the judge not to press any charges. If not they will not see a baht of the 3 million offered. Did people forgot about the kid who cut a girl in half with his porsche? He is a free man. The girl who caused a van to crash and threw people over the bridge? she too is a free women. Disgusting.
Discussion 5 : 26/09/2012 at 04:17 PM
The boy should instead have drunk a drink that made his grandpa famous and rich. From Wikipedia: “Joris Verster and colleagues from Utrecht University concluded that Red Bull Energy Drink reduces driver sleepiness and enhances driving performance during prolonged highway driving.”
Discussion 6 : 26/09/2012 at 04:02 PM
Anytime you drink or see someone drinking a Red Bull think about this brutal stunt and what it represents. Boycott the crud and buy no more.
Discussion 7 : 26/09/2012 at 03:49 PM
3 million? What a joke. When I was finished with Mr. Bull it would be about 200 million.
Discussion 8 : 26/09/2012 at 03:17 PM
The Post owes it to the readers to follow this case until it is brought to court and the verdict given. Jail is warranted but as so many believe unlikely. The Red Bull family is immensely wealthy and minimal amends could be made by using its connection with motor racing to set up a nation-wide driving school with low fees to teach Thais the basic elements of driving skills so absent in this country. 100 million Baht would be a good place to start. Vorayuth Yoovidhya can monitor its performance from his cell until his release then his attendance at the school should be mandatory so he too may learn how to drive.
Discussion 9 : 26/09/2012 at 03:08 PM
D36 smilesss : of course it is not a violation of the law, it is an out of Court settlement, that's happening everyday everywhere in the world and is completely legal ... he will still have to go to Court and face the State against him .
Discussion 10 : 26/09/2012 at 02:26 PM
This action of paying money to the victim's family is open violation of law; it is money paid to influence justice: it can be called compensation only after the court's rulings. This is absolute disrespect to judiciary.
Discussion 11 : 26/09/2012 at 01:18 PM
The point is not what the amount of compensation means to the Red Bull family, but what it means to the policeman's family. And Dis#26 - yes, to pay many millions to a dirt poor sea gypsy who probably struggles to earn 200 baht a day would be absurd.
Discussion 12 : 26/09/2012 at 01:10 PM
What a shame...for both parties! The red bull clan to pay the boy out, but also for the cops family, to accept such a bribery!! Do they not have any self respect??
Discussion 13 : 26/09/2012 at 12:06 PM
Bet the case never comes to court.
Discussion 14 : 26/09/2012 at 11:45 AM
Everybody wants everybody to be equal to the law, and everybody expect the rich to pay more than poor even if the law set's a standard for incidents like this. Makes a lot of sense, the law must be wrong then.
Discussion 15 : 26/09/2012 at 11:42 AM
If every one is so disgusted with the Red Bull family why not start up a dont drink red bull and drive campain globally the best way to punnish this type of people is in there pocket.
Discussion 16 : 26/09/2012 at 11:36 AM
This is outrageous. Let's call for a nationwide boycott of that vile-tasting beverage.
Discussion 17 : 26/09/2012 at 11:26 AM
3 million baht? Who came up with that figure? Thats a drop in the bucket for a family that rich. If my calculating is right thats not even a $100,000 usd. Life is cheap in Thailand.
Discussion 18 : 26/09/2012 at 10:47 AM
It will be very interesting to follow the cort trail in this case (if any ?) No one will know how much money the family will pay to judge's and lawyers. So when you drink Red Bull, you know where you support money.
Discussion 19 : 26/09/2012 at 10:40 AM
Sadly, I can only agree with most posters. This is chump change and probably less than they will spend on the car repairs. One poster had it spot on. As a good buddhist, K.Vorayuth should be doing something worthwhile such as helping poor kids, and doing so in the name of Snr Sgt Maj Wichian. For a very long time.
Discussion 20 : 26/09/2012 at 10:25 AM
Wow, they're giving 1/3 of the value of this kid's toy. Now that's truly showing how sorry they are. 3 million baht is chump change to the obscenely rich. And NO, Barryw, the fact that it's a lot of money for the family of a policeman has no bearing on this. So, using your logic, let's say someone kills a dirt poor sea gypsy, then something like 10,000 Baht should be fine... right?
Discussion 21 : 26/09/2012 at 10:01 AM
3m in a lawless country is not a bad result. I didnt think a life was that expensive here. Unless you wear a redshirt and get shot rioting and burning properties then its worth 7.5m
Discussion 22 : 26/09/2012 at 09:40 AM
I hope the kid can afford 3 million baht .
Discussion 23 : 26/09/2012 at 09:40 AM
3 mil that 60,000 pounds come on that's a night out for the Red Bull family. Its looking more like a suspended sentence each day that passes what a disgrace. You can bet this is kept quiet in the F1 fraternity.
Discussion 24 : 26/09/2012 at 09:35 AM
10 Million Baht would have been better.
Discussion 25 : 26/09/2012 at 09:34 AM
this rich kid who was drunk and possible on drugs, killed and dragged a cop under his car for over 200 metre, then went home and tried to blame a member of his staff,3 million is a insult, life is cheap in thailand,we all pray if found guilty a long prison sentence for this rich kid ,but going by recent events where a young rich girl was resposible for killing 9 people ,without a driving lisence and underaged she got a 2 years suspended,no the law is only for the poor
Discussion 26 : 26/09/2012 at 09:13 AM
just imagine trying to put out the great fire of san francisco by urinating on it that is not quite the same as 3 million dollars let alone baht to "Bosses" account whether you are rich or poor in thailand ,life is cheap, unless of course you are jatuclowns UDD/Red shirt protesters
Discussion 27 : 26/09/2012 at 09:04 AM
Life is so cheap and can be paid when you face a Multimillionaire. whats next? jail sentence is suspended, case drop because 3million family compensation has reached, no more community service, no prison custody.. In next years, karma will hunt this guilty boy again. Rich and bad people never learn.
Discussion 28 : 26/09/2012 at 08:48 AM
It will most likely cost more than 3million Baht to repair the car. A more generous payment to the officer's family would not have only been the right thing to do, it would have been a sound business investment to rehabilitate the Red Bull name.
Discussion 29 : 26/09/2012 at 08:46 AM
I expect plenty of 'Dislikes' for saying so, but 3 million is a very large sum of money to the policeman's family and they are no doubt grateful for it. Also, does the police force not have a scheme to compensate their own killed in the line of duty, giving the family additional income? I do agree with Dis #5 that the Red Bull family should donate money to a charitable cause.
Discussion 30 : 26/09/2012 at 08:15 AM
"He said police are waiting for details of the suspect's blood test results after traces of narcotics were found in his blood." How did the police find traces of narcotics in his blood if they are still waiting for the blood test results??? Come on BP! read what you write before you publish it. You're not making any sense!
Discussion 31 : 26/09/2012 at 08:12 AM
3 million is just the family fee, wonder how much is paid to others involved. Wonder how much was paid to that policeman shot outside a nightclub years ago, allegedly by the son of a policemen politician, lots of witnesses went quiet and the case collapsed.
Discussion 32 : 26/09/2012 at 08:12 AM
as normal the rich trying to pay his way out of Trouble the new 2012 Thai way 30M would be more right and 2 years in Jail
Discussion 33 : 26/09/2012 at 08:11 AM
I guess the repair of the Ferrari will cost more than 3 million baht. Will he send that bill to the family of the police officer who dared to use the road when Mr. VIP needed it?
Discussion 34 : 26/09/2012 at 08:06 AM
While I agree that the amount is very small for a family of this wealth posts like discussion 6 actually just show their jealousy of these rich families.
Discussion 35 : 26/09/2012 at 08:01 AM
In some way I can understand the family accepted the offer @ THB 3.0 mill. In Thailand it is not a good idea to mess with influential families.......
Discussion 36 : 26/09/2012 at 07:49 AM
3 Million? Just 3 million..? That's what is called a pittance by a "Cheap Charlie'. For this extreme rich family it's peanuts. I wonder what would have been paid if the victim would have belonged to the elite? Well, the actions towards falling into oblivion have started; that's for sure.
Discussion 37 : 26/09/2012 at 07:49 AM
I feel the the policeman's family may have been maniplulated here. Maybe they meant 3M as the 1st payment, like an intial payment, with more payments to follow!
Discussion 38 : 26/09/2012 at 07:27 AM
3 million baht is an insult from this billionaire family. Yes why so long for the blood test? Why the cover-up? Who is waiting to get paid?
Discussion 39 : 26/09/2012 at 07:27 AM
Given that the Ferrari cost 32 million, a compensation of 3 million seems like a tip. I mean if daddy can pay 32 million for a toy for his boy, then what are 3 million, or 10 million for him?
Discussion 40 : 26/09/2012 at 07:01 AM
The father of Vorayuth must be so proud of his drunk son...right. And why would any responsible father allow his son to drive a 32,000,000 baht car around Bangkok??? I guess he wants to make sure the family flaunts their richness, let all the kids drive 30,000,000 baht cars...what a lousy example he shows to other families....a truly dysfunctional family!
Discussion 41 : 26/09/2012 at 06:49 AM
I knew it would be some small amount paid out, pathetic, tells you everything about this dude and what he is thinking inside, why not 30 million ? these people are billionaires, he should be spending millions of dollars in charity and building childrens centers in the name of this police man who's life he took, instead comes down to a negotiation of how much money he can save.
Discussion 42 : 26/09/2012 at 06:40 AM
It is peanut money compared to what he is worth. Sdaly I feel the policemans family has sold out possibly due to some gentle hints that if they don't settle they may wait forever and get nothing in the end. Rich families who do things like this sicken me to my stomach. There is no real thought of remorse or sorrow that he killed a human being, just "how cheaply can we buy the family off".
Discussion 43 : 26/09/2012 at 06:30 AM
"He said police are waiting for details of the suspect's blood test results after traces of narcotics were found in his blood." That was weeks ago and the test should have take 30 minutes.. mmmmm still waiting? More likely waiting for their 3 million dollar envelope to arrive before they determine the test results. Could be maybe they can find that there was traces of cough medicine in his blood that might of impaired his ability to drive under 150km per hour through the city.
Discussion 44 : 26/09/2012 at 05:38 AM
Too bad this accident did not happen in the US. Not only would the driver be facing manslaughter and hit-and-run driving charges with prison time assured, he would be paying millions of dollars in compensation. A human life if worth more than a few baht.
Discussion 45 : 26/09/2012 at 02:41 AM
Compensation to avoid a civil suit is reasonable, though B3m seems a bit low coming from one of Thailand's wealthiest families to the family of a police officer. I just hope this does not end up having any effect on the criminal charges.
