PM hails Yongyuth's sacrifice

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Saturday praised Yongyuth Wichaidit for his decision to resign as deputy prime minister and interior minister.

Mr Yongyuth made a sacrifice to prevent any possible negative impact from the Alpine land case on the government, Ms Yingluck said at a news conference held at Suvarnabhumi Airport on her return from the United States.Mr Yongyuth, who went to greet the prime minister at the airport, also attended the news conference.Ms Yingluck said she was sorry to have lost such a capable minister.

However, she said she had no plans for cabinet changes at this time because the deputy interior minister can help handle the work of the ministry."The government wants time to work for the people and that there will be no cabinet reshuffle for the moment," she said.Mr Yongyuth's resignation will take effect on Monday. He remains leader of the Pheu Thai Party and a list MP.Mr Yongyuth, 70, had been under pressure to quit the cabinet since the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) found him guilty of malfeasance in the Alpine land case while he was a deputy permanent secretary for the Interior Ministry in 2002.He had approved the sale of plots of land in Pathum Thani to Alpine Real Estate and Alpine Golf and Sports Club in 2002 despite a Council of State ruling that it was monastic land and could not be sold or transferred. The real estate developer had connections with former deputy interior minister Sanoh Thienthong, and the property was later sold to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The ministry's civil service committee on Sept 14 expelled Mr Yongyuth with the order retroactive to Sept 30, 2002. However, it claimed the expulsion was also retroactively overruled by the 2007 Exoneration Act.The opposition Democrats said the attempt to invoke the exoneration law was a desperate attempt to keep the minister in his seat, and reports persisted that Mr Yongyuth was pressed to step down by Thaksin himself. If and when a cabinet reshuffle does take place, reports suggest there are three candidates for the deputy premier's job: former interior ministers Pokin Polakul and Chidchai Wannasathit, and Pol Gen Priewpan Damapong, who has just retired as national police chief.Pol Gen Priewpan is the brother of Khunying Potjaman na Pombejra, Thaksin's former wife.Sopeculation continues in any case about a cabinet reshuffle that may take place in October or November. Those close to Thaksin are considering two options -- appointing two individuals to fill both vacant seats (Interior and Deputy PM) or having a current minister double as a deputy premier and selecting a new interior minister. One source said former deputy interior minister Sermsak Pongpanit has emerged as a candidate for the interior post.Pheu Thai stalwarts hailed Mr Yongyuth's resignation as a sacrifice.Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat described Mr Yongyuth's resignation as an act of courage. However, he said it had nothing to do with setting an example for other politicians. "The issue is about differences in opinions. He decided to quit to avoid complications. That's courage."

Another PT member is ready to take up this minister vacancy. Yet another envy for the dems.
Discussion 2 : 30/09/2012 at 08:59 AM
D34: Really grasping at straws to deflect criticism of obvious, even confirmed, corruption. Can't you just admit a PT gang member was corrupt?
Discussion 3 : 30/09/2012 at 08:54 AM
D23: That's easy. Major shareholders in Post Publishing include the Chirathivat family (owners of Central Group, Centara Hotels etc), the South China Morning Post of Hong Kong and GMM Grammy Pcl, Thailand's biggest media and entertainment company.

Discussion 34 - if there is a limit on how much of anything that can be donated to a temple, they had better start taking out 99 of those 100 (or however many) bowls that are at most temples. Had he not illegally allowed the temple ground to be sold, perhaps there might have been a very big one built there where he could have gone for bigger blessings. His departure with dignity is simply a case of saying 'I quit' just before the boss says 'you're fired'. And the longer he stayed the more dirt might have been dug from the fairway at the Alpine Golf Course, couldn't have that happen.
Discussion 5 : 29/09/2012 at 11:55 PM
I don't think it matters anymore to PT if their kicked out, they've all filled their boots to the max and topped up their bank accounts. Mission accomplished
Discussion 6 : 29/09/2012 at 09:35 PM
Peterl - thank you for your comment. However, you naively assume Yongyuth resigned. He was almost certainly 'asked' to resign because his position is untenable. He is a criminal and not worthy of serving in a government (however, he fits right in with Peua Thai).
Discussion 7 : 29/09/2012 at 09:31 PM
Let's see him make a real sacrifice, have him go to the South and mediate peace talks and stop the killing. And perhaps there's some temple land around that he can sell off and make some money while he's there.
Discussion 8 : 29/09/2012 at 09:20 PM
Now that Yongyuth has passed on, will Chalerm be taking on his heavy work load?
Discussion 9 : 29/09/2012 at 09:06 PM
Yingluck: "The government wants time to work for the people” So when will they start to work for the people? They wasted more than a year to get the fugitive back and luckily they did not succeed. And I remember something like: there won’t be any flood anymore, sure…
Discussion 10 : 29/09/2012 at 09:06 PM
How much land can be accepted as monastic in one parcel. This seems like a lot of land donated all at one time in one place. Maybe the accpetance of this much land was illegal to begin with.

'However, she said she had no plans for cabinet changes at this time....'. The lying gets worse. As if she had any plans at all ! Thaksin's arrogance leads to his control becoming more obvious to all and grounds for PTP to be disbanded. They should have been from day 1 when he so clearly stated he was their leader : 'Thaksin thinks;PTP acts'.

faceless Dis#29 ,"Like him or loath him, Thaksin was voted in before (twice) by the majority. It's called democracy". Being faceless and all , people may start too assume that you may well be brainless along with it , though i do feel for ya mate , really ? I thought it was actualy called , a convicted criminal fugitive ex polititian fleeing his countries justice system for his obvious involvment in several current and pending cases of mass corruption ?

Mr Yongyuth made a sacrifice to prevent any possible negative impact from the Alpine land case on the government, Ms Yingluck said at a news conference held at Suvarnabhumi Airport on her return from the United States. Nice try , she would obviously like to think so , wouldn`t she ? Yongyuth sacrificing himself (fat chance) doesn`t end the land encroachment investigation yingluck , in your DPM now doing so , it just goes to prove that it was a dodgy and corrupt deal and the whole truth should now be told to the people of Thailand and the rest of those involved should suffer the same fate , even if via skype , cell phone and or via proxy ! Enough with the blattant red lies and corruption yingluck , the Thai people , including those that Voted 1 luck , for a lousy 20 bucks , deserve a bit better than that !
Discussion 14 : 29/09/2012 at 06:47 PM
englishbob - cool down, you don't have a monopoly of the truth. The Thais have a problem in their politics and your "stuck record" one-sided comments are not at all helpful in terms of helping them to reach a compromise. It should not be rocket science to understand that. Mr Yonguth has done the right thing by resigning before push came to shove. That is how democratic politics tends to work.

So now can they focus on who bought the property? Why do the people of Thailand put up with these crooks?

What is a "top" minister? Weird use of language. He has got great hair though.
Discussion 19 : 29/09/2012 at 03:25 PM
Bangkok will host F1 when pigs can fly. There is not a road surface in Thailand capable of handling those cars. Thais have enough time building airport runways that don't come unglued.
Discussion 20 : 29/09/2012 at 02:08 PM
So Bangkok is hosting 2014 F1. 60% sponsored by the tax payer and the balance by Red Bull and Singha. It will be a night race through the city. Hope Jenson don't knock over any food stalls.

Disc 13 Barry - 'Trumped up?' I dare you to write that Thaksin Shinawatra is innocent of corruption. And if you fall back on the most ridiculous defence of all ("Other people are corrupt too."), I'll chalk you up as another Red Sheep with no moral compass at all. Corrupt people deserve punishment. Period. It doesn't matter if he's popular amongst rice farmers and taxi drives - he's corrupt. And BTW, Thaksin was banned from politics for election fraud. Therefore his constant meddling in Thailand's affairs is a breach of the rules and sufficient to disband this government too. It's called 'Law and Order'.

Discussion 17, crunchy, ah yes, it's TV personality and Secretary General of the UDD Mr Nattawut Saikua giving his much needed support, right. He's like Jatuporn's twin - it's hard to tell them apart.

It is too late for the Puea Thaksin regime warding off bad luck and ying luck. Karma is finally catching up on them.

Just one in a long line of fugitives .How many times has this party had to rename itself because of their corruption .The leader is a fugitive .How about PT starts acting grown up and sacrifices the fugitive and all the the other MPs hiding from their crimes or would that be too much reality for them .
Discussion 29 : 29/09/2012 at 10:51 AM
I must have missed something here. There I was thinking we have a guy found guilty of malfeasance, selling monastic land in order to build a golf course - now goes to a Wat to ward off bad luck! What kind of Buddhist is this guy? Then to top it off, Defence Minister ACM Sukumpol Suwanatat described Mr Yongyuth's as courageous, plus a source said if Mr Yongyuth can clear legal complications by that time, he may be given the interior minister post back. The conceited nature of these people is mind-blowing.
Discussion 30 : 29/09/2012 at 10:39 AM
In the picture, is that Jatuporn Prompan ('messianic Red Shirt leader') behind Yongyuth? Don't tell me he's next in line for the vacancy of deputy PM?! If so, we can expect plenty of super angry PAD demanding another coup.
Discussion 31 : 29/09/2012 at 10:05 AM
Dis#2 (and others) - There is absolutely no point in the constant comments that it is The Man in Dubai who is running the country rather than his sister. The vast majority of the people who voted for the Pheu Thai knew perfectly well that would be the case and is why they voted the way they did. Like him or loath him, Thaksin was voted in before (twice) by the majority. It's called democracy, and the 'Establishment' found ways to oust him with a coup and trumped up corruption charges (as if they weren't also guilty of corruption themselves).
Discussion 32 : 29/09/2012 at 10:05 AM
Phuea Thai seems to slowly getting aware that the Dems can push for their dissolution at any time. "His departure, ... is said to have received consent from Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her brother Thaksin" is just another bullet in the Dems gun.
Discussion 33 : 29/09/2012 at 09:58 AM
http://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opinion/313963/yongyuth-uncertain-political-future As you can see from this article, that this is really an entangled mess dating back more than 15 years. and the disciplinary actions are also a bit unclear. But from the PT's point of view there is nothing gain by keeping him on as he had already hinted at retirement, so they likely asked him to resign to avoid the controversy. I don't know if this makes the DP happy or unhappy as they were likely hoping to stir the pot with the issue.
Discussion 34 : 29/09/2012 at 09:30 AM
D1@brilliant - perhaps he went to the temple to seek absolution from being involved in turning monastic land into a golf course. BTW in yesterday's picture of his resignation he was flanked by a solemn looking Natawut and Jatupon. Surely they should have been cheering as this is exactly the sort of amart behaviour their constituents are supposedly against
Discussion 35 : 29/09/2012 at 09:17 AM
"Pheu Thai yesterday hailed Mr Yongyuth's resignation as a sacrifice". Yea a sacrifice for corruption!
Discussion 36 : 29/09/2012 at 09:15 AM
"He decided to quit to avoid complications. That's courage." Sukumpol is on a different planet to the rest of us. What on earth is he doing in a government?.
Discussion 37 : 29/09/2012 at 08:59 AM
Okay, good. Now what about the buyers and sellers involved in the illegal transaction? Also what about the lawyer(s) that should have done the title search?
Discussion 38 : 29/09/2012 at 08:37 AM
He needed some days to think it over. So, I wonder what deal has been made...to soften the resignation...
Discussion 39 : 29/09/2012 at 07:41 AM
Another reason we don't here the phrase, "crime doesn't pay" in Thailand...at least, within a certain social group of high, "earners". I do understand the religious principles about forgiveness and turning the other cheek, but, as brilliant points out, there are people who abuse the trust displayed by such principles and buy their way into good graces with no real conviction of the heart. Karma awaits such people who believe all will be forgiven.
Discussion 40 : 29/09/2012 at 07:30 AM
"His departure, which will take effect on Monday, is said to have received consent from Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her brother Thaksin." Sounds like the patrone made him an offer he couldn't refuse. "He decided to quit to avoid complications. That's courage." What courage? The guy was in a corner with nowhere to go but down into the foetal position.
Discussion 41 : 29/09/2012 at 06:10 AM
Complications can be seen as guilt from the past having consequences in the present.
Discussion 42 : 29/09/2012 at 05:06 AM
So now even the newspapers openly admit that it is thaksin who runs Thailand through his sister from abroad . . . " His departure, which will take effect on Monday, is said to have received consent from Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her brother Thaksin " and no one cares ?
Discussion 43 : 29/09/2012 at 04:45 AM
"Mr Yongyuth's announcement was made after he paid respects to a senior monk at Wat Sa Ket and took part in a blessing ceremony." This statement is just an exclamation point of what a hypocrite this guy is. Allowed the burning and clear cutting of huge tracts of land in the North, allowed the sale of land from a temple to build a golf course, but thinks he'll be okay if he has a blessing ceremony before he resigns? Let's see the indictment(and one for his buddy that bought the land).
