The Phra Ram 2 branch of Kasikornbank in Samut Sakhon's Muang district was targeted in a 1.35-million-baht armed robbery.
Yuthiwada Kaewsuanjit, 31, an employee at the bank, said two men with guns stormed the building around noon and ordered everybody inside to get on the floor. They then emptied the cashiers' drawers of money and fled.
Pol Lt Col Tsongsak Kaewpolnoi, deputy superintendent of Muang district Prakan police station, said one man wore a motorbike helmet while the other wore a camo hat and had his face covered with a hankerchief. The two drove away on a motorcycle using the road leading to tambon Tha Chalom.
In Surat Thani’s Ban Na Derm district, a man stole more than 800,000 baht from the district branch of the Government Savings Bank at 9.45am.
Titinan Attapornpong, a 24-year-old bank employee, said a man wearing a motorcycle helmet, a white t-shirt, blue jacket, and cropped pants, entered the bank briefly after a customer had started the process of depositing one million baht.
As she was about to hand the money to the cashier, the robber ran towards her and threatened her with a knife while demanding the cash. Frightened, she threw the banknotes to the ground and ran outside.
The man put money into a plastic bag and ran out the bank, which is about 200 metres from the district police station.
Police found the helmet and jacket that the robber wore during the heist in a nearby rubber field along with a note that said: "I have the profiles of all the personnel at the bank, if any of them provide information to the police, then I will harm their families.”
Pol Maj Gen Kiattipong Kaosa-arng, chief of Surat Thani police, said he believed the thief is someone who knew the customer who was attempting to make the large deposit. Footage from closed-circuit cameras will be used to aid the investigation, he added.
In Bangkok, a man meanwhile escaped with 270,000 baht after robbing the Thon Buri branch of Kasikornbank, police said.
Pol Lt Wichen Inchan, an inspector at Bupharam police station, quoted bank staff members as saying that the man was armed with a gun and wore a motorbike helmet and a black outfit to commit the crime at 11.40am. He fled on a motorcycle heading towards the Wong Wian Yai area.
The man took less than two minutes to carry out his crime, police said.
Officers in all three areas hit by the thefts are going after the robbers.
