More than just a burger

Chunky Burgers Open Tues-Sun: 11am-10pm Chunky, 110/1 Sukhumvit 23Call 091-742-4094 Facebook:, IG: @chunkys23

The Setting

Nestled within Sukhumvit 23 near Narz nightclub, burger place Chunky has gone under a complete renovation, sporting a new concept and menu. Owner Aekkachai "Belt" Saengkardsanee has decided to use ingredients from various parts of Thailand, while striking a balance of making classic burgers with a Thai twist.

The decor of the eatery has changed from a loft cafe to a more industrial style. The small space gives an intimate, homey vibe -- evoking feels of relaxation and a great place to hangout with friends. Once you make your order, you can have a look at their open kitchen where the staff carefully prepares your meal.

The Menu

Belt has gone through a complete rework of the menu. All of the resto's brioche-shaped buns, called the Chunky bun, are soft and chewy and are prepared on site when you order. Chunky's reworked menu consist of three main burgers -- each has been personified as a character. While gimmicky, each burger does suit what it represents.

Playing the husband, the Classic Chunky burger (B250 for pork, B300 for beef), is the "standard" in which the burger consists of either dry-aged beef or pork patty combined with housemade chunky sauce, mulberry onion jam, shallots and cucumbers. I opted to go for Chunky's wife burger (B270 for pork, B330 for beef). Along with the choice of meat and the chunky sauce, she comes with a fried egg, bacon jam and nam prik ong chili paste. The burst of flavour that I got when I sank my teeth into this sexy beast can only be described as sweet and spicy. I also delved into the Daddy burger (B275 for pork, B335 for beef). The highlight is the truffle brown sauce, which gives the burger a strong taste. Outside of the three, the highly presentable (and fairly large) Chicken with salted egg and cheese burger (B340) is another delight with its aforementioned yellow dressing oozing out of the tender chicken and bun. For maximum enjoyment, be sure to use hands -- the way burgers are meant to be eaten!

Apart from their titular chunky burgers, the menu also includes appetizers, pasta, drinks and desserts. I tried their deep-fried Onion rings with two dips (B190). Rich in oily and beer-battered crispiness, its two dips help give the rings two separate flavours -- one being their homemade curry ketchup and the other being mayonnaise mixed with cheese and salted eggs, ingredients which Belt said come from Surat Thani. You can taste their picante Mama's spicy chicken wings (B260) lathered in the resto's secret sauce. Finger lickin' good!

Their Spaghetti carbonara (B290) is highly recommended if you aren't looking to get your hands messy. Unlike your usual creamy pasta, the resto's take on the dish puts a yolky egg right in the centre and is topped with lots of bacon crumble. I savoured every moment in its creaminess with the crumble giving it a fine crunchy taste here and there.

As of now the resto's only dessert is the Vanilla and yolk ice cream with brulee bun. The vanilla ice-cream has been mixed with raw egg yolks that give the cream a sweet and salty mix. Pair it with the crusty bun and you might end up finishing the whole thing before you even realise it.

Insider's Tip

Chunky has a sizable drinks menu. Personally, I would say burgers are best enjoyed with beer and the resto does not disappoint. You have your usual selection of local and imported beers but they also supply eight different Thai craft beers (B195-295). There's a nice range of of non-alcoholic beverages to choose from too, from soft drinks and milk teas to milkshakes and mocktails. Those coming in with a vehicle can park at the Two Three Hotel, located next to restaurant.

Value & Verdict

The title of the restaurant delivers what fans of burgers have come to expect -- full of chunky goodness. If you've been to the restaurant before but have yet to try their new menu, find yourself some time to have a taste. Prices are reasonable for what you get and it shows that the staff carefully prepare the burgers as if it were a work of art. To quote their slogan, it's more than just a burger.
